SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT Anyone who had active duty service between January 1957 and December 31, 2001 and planning for retirement. In a nutshell it boils down to this: You qualify for a higher social security payment because of your Military service, for active duty any time from 1957 through 2001 (the program was done away with 1 January 2002). Up to $1200 per year of earnings credit credited at time of application - which can make a substantial difference in social security monthly payments upon your retirement. Just talked to SS and they said the military benefit is NOT an additional benefit. The way it works is if you do not have enough quarters to qualify for benefits your military service can be used to give you the additional quarters needed. Too bad, I was looking forward to some extra money. Oh well. Hope this info will help someone.

• The new Publix grocery store is now open at the Ormond Mall.

• Thirty stores (about 90% of the available space); eight restaurants and a theater complex are open at the new Pavilion in Port Orange, Florida. The Pavilion is an open-air shopping center at 5501 S. Williamson Blvd., Port Orange, Florida.
• The China Taste New York style take out restaurant, is now open at the OrmondMall in Ormond By The Sea, Florida at 1228 Ocean Shore Blvd. next to the Family Dollar store. There was a large eat-in Chinese Buffet at the mall years ago that did not last very long. China Taste has a full menu with all your favorites from appetizers to combination plates and lunch specials.

• Work has begun on a beachside park in Ormond By The Sea, Florida at Roberta Road on the east side of A1A. Part  of the same project includes approximately 1 acre on the west side of A1A at Carol Road that will provide additional parking for the park.
• Orlando Magic star and Mainland High School Graduate, Vince Carter, has opened a restaurant at 2150 LPGABlvd., just east of I-95 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
• Effective January 1, 2010, new identification requirements took effect for Florida residents getting a driver license or identification card. You will be required to visit a driver license office and show proof of: 1) identification, 2) Social Security number and 3) residential address (two items). • Sloppy Joe's Restaurant is now open at the Ocean Walk Shoppes on Atlantic Avenue, near the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach.
• When real estate values in Ormond By The Sea, Florida were increasing drastically several years ago, the property appraiser told you that the higher values would mean higher taxes so any objection to your tax bill would probably be fruitless. As the value of your property began to fall some of you saw your tax bill actually decrease. Values for this year will once again show a decline probably around 15% according to early "guesstimations" by the Volusia County Property Appraiser. But declining values may not mean a lower tax bill if the taxing authorities do not cut spending. If spending is not cut, tax rates will increase to cover the expenses of taxing authorities.
• Surfside Hotel and Suites at 251 South Atlantic Avenue in Ormond Beach is scheduled to be demolished beginning mid May 2010.
• Heffer's Twooo Cafe is now open at 1460 Ocean Shore Blvd at the Ocean Shore Plaza. They are open daily for breakfast and lunch.
• TheMain Street CoquinaArch, built in 1926, is undergoing restoration that is scheduled to be completed in June. The gate way to the beach will have its structural supports replaced when it is determined how best to bring the Coquina back to its original look.

Lenders involved in 9 of the 16 sales of Ormond By The Sea, Florida homes through the Daytona Beach Area Multiple Listing Service during April, 2010.  An additional 50 homes are under contract awaiting closing and 24 of those are flagged as short sales or bank owned.  The number of sales compares favorably to the past 3 years where between 10 & 15 homes have sold each April since 2007.  The lowest price paid was a 2-bedroom on Essex Dr. for $74,900 and the highest was a 4-bedroom on John Anderson Dr. for $485,000.  Only 5 sales were above $125,000 and 8 were $100,000 or less.  The average sold price was $141,606.

Sea Turtle Nesting Season begins in Ormond By The Sea, Florida

East Central Florida including Ormond By The Sea, Daytona Beach and all of Volusia County are under lighting restrictions form May 1 to October 31 each year.  The restrictions are designed to protect several species of endangered and threatened sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs. 

Balcony, porch and other lights that could potentially be seen from the beach must be turned off or shielded.

Hatchlings head to the ocean when they emerge from their nest and could be confused by lights coming from the opposite direction.

We began the year with 88 condos for sale in Ormond By the Sea, Florida and as of April 30, 2010 we have 98 for sale through the Daytona Beach Area Multiple Listing Service.    Except for a Barrier Island and a Seabridge condo, everything priced over $220,000 is either 3-bedroom or directly on the beach.  There are 53 priced $200,000 or lower and 7 of those are under $100,000.  Additionally, there are 6  condos under contract pending closing and 3 of those were also pending last month.  Below is a table breaking down the inventory by condominium name.
