Fourth of July Independence Day Celebration

Celebrate the 4th on the banks of the Halifax River.

The free Independence Day Celebration in Ormond Beach Florida will feature Food, music, games and fireworks July 4, 2010 6PM to 10PM. Fireworks start at 9:30 PM.

The event takes place at 3 corners of the Granada Bridge: Rockefeller Gardens, Fortunato Park, and City Hall Plaza. There will be food and music on each corner. In the patriotic Kids' Corner at Fortunato Park there will be juggling, a magic show, strolling performers, arts and crafts, games, and inflatables. Uncle Sam, Ben Franklin and Abe Lincoln are expected to attend to talk with the kids.

There is a paved walkway under the east side of the Granada Bridge to allow walking from Fortunato Park to Rockefeller Gardens.

Daytona Beach Pier Restoration

The city of Daytona Beach, Florida recently took full control of the 745-foot- long pier in the heart of the beachside tourist district. Restoration work has begun and is expected to be completed by February 2010 when the city hopes to reopen the pier along with the restaurant and gift shop. Additional improvements will probably continue while the pier is open to the public. The sky ride will probably be refurbished also.

Washington Oaks State Park Becomes A Historic District

The Washington Oaks Gardens State Park off A1A in Flagler County recently was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Historic District for the period of 1937 to 1965. The Historic District encompasses 21 acres of the 389 acres National Park. During the recent celebration a new gift shop opened in one of the old re-furbished buildings. Marineland, in Northern Flagler County received the Historic designation in 1986. The Florida Tennis Center at Daytona Beach to host Youth Tournament

The Daytona Beach Tennis center will host the USTA Junior Team Tennis Summer Section Championship on August 6, 2010 to August 8, 2010. This makes the first time this tournament is to be held at the 24 Court Tennis Center since it opened in 2001. Winners will compete in the National Tournament. Gourmet Kitchen Restaurant Closing in Ormond By The Sea, Florida

The Gourmet Kitchen Restaurant , a fixture at the Ormond Mall in Ormond By The Sea, Florida for over 20 years, is closing. Ormond mall Publix is expanding and will take the space the Gourmet Kitchen occupies. Gourmet Kitchen was notified in February that their lease would not be renewed. The restaurant is seeking a new location in Ormond By the Sea, Florida.

If you have comments, questions or suggestions do not hesitate to contact us. BUSINESS BRIEFS Dollar General is open at 1550 Ocean Shore Blvd. Miss Priss, a Consignment Boutique, is open at 152 W. Granada Blvd. Frame of Mind, Custom Picture Framing, is open at 23 W. Granada Blvd. American Health Lab is open at 1184 Ocean Shore Blvd. Nickcole’s Hair Studio is open at 1341 Ocean Shore Blvd. Cerchio Neighborhood Italian Café is open at the Tuscany Shoppes on Granada Blvd., in the store previously occupied by San Francisco Oven. Rachel’s Shoes & Bags is open at 203 E. Granada Blvd. Wal-Mart has decided not to build a second store in Port Orange. Caffeine is open at 49 W. Granada Blvd., serving lunch and dinner. It is not a coffee shop. LOCAL NOTES International Speedway Corporation has broken ground for its new 200,000 Sq. Ft. Headquarters across the street from the Speedway. The new building will also house NASCAR Employees and be the cornerstone of the "Daytona Live!" complex. The new, 8 story building is scheduled for completion late next year. Continental & AirTran have announced plans to discontinue service to the Daytona Beach Airport. The Florida Lottery has added midday drawings for Cash 3 and Play 4. Seaside Music Theater has canceled its entire 2008 Summer Season due to its financial situation. The Daytona Beach Museum of Arts & Sciences has become accredited by the American Association of Museums. "Daytona Live!" is an entertainment destination that will begin to take shape in 2010 across the street from the Speedway. Current plans call for Retail, Night Clubs, Restaurants, A Theater and Hotel along with residential space. Books-A-Million will return to the area in April, 2009 at the Volusia Mall. Breakers Oceanfront Park is now open south of the Main Street Pier. The park has parking, water play area, Beach access, Volleyball and benches. Florida ranked second in the country as Pro-Business in the Pollina Corporate Top 10 Pro-Business States Study. Residential building permits for the first quarter of 2008 were about half of what they were in the first quarter of 2007 according to the Volusia County Department of Economic Development. YMCA Organizations in Volusia & Flagler Counties are merging and members will have access to all YMCA facilities in both counties. A Holiday Inn is under construction at the I-95 LPGA Intersection. Kohl’s Department Store will open in September in Port Orange. Daytona State College is the new name for Daytona Beach Community College. Powerball, the Multi-State Lottery, is coming to Florida in January. Five of the 2007 sales were listed by Ocean View Realty Group. At the end of 2006 there were 151 Condos for sale and at the end of 2007 there were 125. Many owners, especially those that purchased at the higher end when the market was hot are holding out for prices to go back up before putting their property on the market. Some would face a substantial loss if their property sold in the current market. Almost half of the 50 Condos sold in 2007 sold for $215,000 or less. There were 11 sales of 2 bedroom, 2 bath, ocean view condos above the first floor for $215,000 or less. That compares to zero in 2006. Of the 10, 2006 sales under $215,000 all were non ocean view or first floor units. Selling prices for ocean view condos across A1A from the beach in 2006 ranged from $265,000 to $346,000. Those selling prices are pretty much unattainable in the current market. Lenny’s N.Y. Pizza is open at 1456 Ocean Shore Blvd. The House of Donuts at 1350 Ocean Shore Blvd., is now serving sandwiches and on cold days they will have soup. La Bella Vista, a Gourmet Italian Market and Deli is open at 138 West Granada. Daytona Lagoon has added the Phoenix, a 65’ swinging thrill ride in the center of the Go-Kart track. Noah’s Butcher Shop is coming soon at Granada Plaza. Fish City Grill is now open in the back of the Trails Shopping Center. Cafee Capri Restorante is now open in the Trails Shopping Center. Tradewinds Grille is now open on Hand Ave., in Ormond Beach Pure Skin & Body Care is open at 725 W. Granada. The Purple Dragonfly Boutique is open at 1462 W. Granada. US Airways begins nonstop service to Charlotte from the Daytona Beach Airport in February. Air Tran Airways will offer nonstop service to LaGuardia from the Daytona Beach Airport in February. No new date has been announced for this seasonal service. Air Tran has also resumed a Saturday Flight to Baltimore. LOCAL NOTES An outbreak of Red Tide in early October had everyone coughing. A Holding Company of General Electric Asset Management has purchased the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Hotel at 100 N. Atlantic Ave. for $142 million. The Hotel was formally a Marriott and Adams Mark. According to State Population Data 9,195 people moved to Volusia County in the 12 month period ending September 30, 2007. Most of the new residents came from other areas in Florida. DBCC celebrated their 50th Anniversary in October 2007. Ormond Beach will be erecting "Gateway" signs at entrances to the city over the next several years. Expansion of the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach is still set to be completed next summer. The Greyhound Bus Station in Daytona Beach has seen a makeover with new paint, tile and restrooms. INC. Magazine has rated the Deltona/Daytona Beach/Ormond Beach area as the Fifth hottest place in the country for Business in medium sized cities. The Daytona Beach area CVB has launched a new Ad Campaign to promote the area as a prime tourist spot. A1A from Granada to the Flagler County line was granted Scenic Highway Designation along with the Loop. Route 1 in Ormond Beach from a few blocks north of Granada to the county line will be resurfaced beginning soon. The project should be completed next summer. Florida Hospital Ormond has topped off the new building, which is scheduled to open in July, 2009. J & P Cycles is open at 145 Destination Daytona. A new Playground is open at Fire Station 91 on Atlantic Ave. in Ormond Beach. The theme is a Fire Station and Fire Truck. ORMOND BY THE SEA CONDO MARKET In September 2007 Realtor Marion O’Connor of Ocean View realty Group had 2 of her listings sold. In November 2007, 2 more of Marion’s listing sold. Sale prices for 2 Bedroom 2 Bath Ocean View Condos on the west side of A1A were from $198,000 to $216,500. If you are thinking of selling you should speak to Marion before going any farther.
